Besides Will Cole's "Ketotarian," this is the only veggie keto book I've ever found that takes a serious stab at serving as an essential resource. And it does better than "Ketotarian" by not spending half its pages preaching to the choir about the benefits of vegetarianism and of keto, and by not including stupid seafood recipes haha. Some of the smoothie recipes are a little uninspired, but outside of that chapter, only a handful of the recipes are trivial and some are even truly inspired. It has been a joy to explore over the past couple weeks.On the whole the recipes are a *smidge* high on the net carbs...creating meal plans solely using the recipes in this book would land you in the 35-50g range much more often than, say, <25g. But at least these carbs mostly come from fruits and veggies rather than grains or added sugars.Although it relies on basic cooking techniques and the instructions are easy to follow, I wouldn't recommend it for veggie keto beginners or people on a budget: it makes regular use of items you'd probably never have on hand if you weren't on keto (e.g. psyllium husk, almond flour), obscure items you might not have heard of (e.g. asafoetida, golden flaxseed, guarana powder, freeze-dried pear or raspberry powder, lovage, gellan gum, agar), and less-obscure items that are still kinda pretentious (e.g. toasted almond flakes, vanilla stick, mango chutney, hemp seeds, dark miso paste). This along with the relatively high carb counts are what keep me from giving this the full 5 stars.Finally, it lacks a bit of polish. Noticeably, the font formatting like size/color is not consistent. Some things like the steps of a recipe or list of ingredients are sometimes not consistent even within one recipe, let alone from one to another; it makes it feel cheap. There's a chapter on "low-carb cheese" which made me laugh at first since cheese is already famously low-carb; turns out they are vegan cheeses, which would've been a more sensible title! Every recipe states how many servings it creates (e.g. "Serves: 4") which is of course useful for understanding the nutrition, but no qualitative description of what a serving is (e.g. "2 eggs", "1 cup", "3 pancakes", etc.).
Disclaimer: I received a digital copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review. Overall, it looks like a pretty good book for somebody beginning a keto vegetarian diet with a good spread of tasty-looking and fairly easy recipes -- lots of eggs, avocados, nuts and seeds, greens & veggies, and more. Nothing to "exotic" which is a plus for me, since I'm just a beginner. The author also includes some tables with the nutritional profiles/macros of most of the ingredients referred to, which is handy (I don't have to go online and look it up if I'm trying to track macros). As a vegan with a vegetarian family, I appreciate how the table of contents indicates which recipes are vegan, which are lacto, and which are ovo (FYI, the book contains 40 vegan recipes, which I thought was more than enough). Content-wise, there are a good variety of good-looking recipes categorized by "Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Low-carb Cheese Recipes, Snacks, Smoothies". Could use more pictures (since the pics are beautiful). It's also pretty simplistic in terms of layout and graphic design (no fun "callout" or "fun fact!" boxes here, special sections with tips/tricks, etc.), which could be a pro/con depending on who you ask. Overall, though, I'm definitely planning to use it starting TODAY and am satisfied with the spread of recipes inside.
To be honest, eating a plant-based diet on keto can be really difficult (heck, its difficult when you're not keeping keto). But this book has a lot of great recipes and resources that can be hard to find elsewhere. Definitely a good resource, especially considering how little there is out there on this topic.
There are many reasons a person might come to the place of adopting a vegetarian keto diet, but once adopted, there are precious few resources to help. This cookbook is going to be a classic! Detailed information is provided along with clear, concise recipes and great-looking pictures. I feel sure I will be turning to it again and again over the months ahead. I'm extremely excited to have it!
I received a digital version in exchange for an honest review. As a ketogenic vegetarian a book represents an interesting source of recepies with all nutritional data. The recepies are divided into sections as a type of meal. Very neat and simple.
Have done keto before but was looking into trying it again with a more plant-based approach. This book is amazing, with great information, and more importantly, recipes. Have tried a few already and am excited to try them all
