One of the most informative books I believe ever written about the lives and pursuits of the native American, as well as his art of them, truly a masterpiece. Should be in every school, library!
Great book well written.If you are interested in Indian history and how they lived you have to read this book Catlin was a famous artist and any of his paintings bring huge sums when sold
The authenticity of this book is remarkable. Not only did he write the history but he painted it. So much of the writings about life with the Indians is obviously phony but this isn't one of them. I enjoyed every word of it and looking for more.
If you like ethnology, you will love this book. Catlin's powers of observation were extraordinary for the times as he studied and painted Native Americans around the country in the 1800's.
Catlin devoted his life to recording the appearance and culture of Native Americans, recognizing the value of preserving a way of life that was disappearing. He showed great respect and empathy. In the process he describes experiences that are difficult to imagine today.A note on the Kindle edition: it has numerous typos and mis-formatted text, it obviously had little or no proofreading, thus minus one star, not because of the content.
This is an excellent read and gives a very comprehensive picture of the every day life of the many Indian tribes of that era. Catlin was very courageous to go freely among all of the tribes and had the artistic talent to impress the Indians with his artistic talent which undoubtedly had much to do with his safety. It would have been amazing to see what he could have done with the photographic tools available today. I have been reading a lot of the accounts lately from this era by others and have a much clearer picture of life in those times. The writers had much better descriptive talent working with just words than most present day authors. Most of these books are far better than anything that could be put on film in terms of conveying what life was like then.
Catlin was a man of high character who saw indian life of the early 1800 like few others. As they submitted to his brush and canvas, so much was learned by him, of them. He married a mandan yet criused the west in persuit subjects that fill our galleries today. See you in heaven George!
interesting and refreshing to read a clear descriptive account without the entitled political correctness and self importancethat characterizes much of todays journalism
