Fran Bailey grew up on a flower nursery near York, England, where her Dutch father encouraged her love of horticulture. I absolutely LOVE this book! I first got it from my library to check it out because I am interested in expanding my collection of houseplants. After keeping the book for much longer than my borrowing period, I decided that I couldn't live without it so I bought my own copy. It starts with some ideas for how to design a display of your plants and then shows some projects you can do with different types of plants. But by far my favorite part of the book is the largest portion, which is devoted to the plant profiles. This section covers all different types of plants from ferns to palms to cactus. Information for temperature, light, humidity, size, and watering is included for each plant, as well as warnings about whether the plants are toxic to pets. There is also a helpful section for diagnosing problems with your plants and a great diagram explaining the different amounts of sunlight. This book is perfect for anyone looking for a guide to help decide what will be the best plant for them, which is exactly what I had been looking for without much luck.
I find that house plant guides are usually awful or hard to read. This is one of two books that I would absolutely recommend. The other one is "How Not to Kill Your Houseplants." Personally I think you should get both.
Really great guide to houseplants. I am an experienced outdoor vegetable gardener, who has never had much success with houseplants. The only one I've ever been able to keep alive is, George, my un-killable Aspidistra (Iron Plant). Thanks to this book and the briefer book"How Not to Kill Your Houseplant: Survival Tips... " I now have a little forest of air cleaning plants, succulents, retro 70's plants (rubber plant, and swiss cheese plant), and even two indoor banana trees - all healthy and happy. Even George is happier than ever, with new leaves. Thank you!
Arrived as promised, good and relevant information, however needed more information on propagation, which it lacked.
I love how this looks on my coffee table, but it's been a great go-to for referring back and I have written notes in the book as well about my own plants. Its a great one to have on-hand for the beginner!

Love the info in the book itself, it's very helpful and inspiring. However, the book came less than a week ago and it has already started to detach from the center :/ I'm putting tape on the pages as I go cause I truly am trying to educate myself more about houseplants and I don't want to loose pages.
