Becky Wicks has been a freelance writer since the age of fourteen. I probably should have read some of the reviews before buying this book before I bought it. I was hoping for some insights into the culture of the UAE in general and Dubai in particular but found this book degenerated into an emofied love triangle with liberal amounts of liquor and rabbit trailing thrown into the mix. By the time the author goes on an trip to Nepal (another culture I'm fascinated by) , I no longer cared about her misalliances. Frankly, I've gained more cultural insight from Harlequinesque-type "shaikh" romances than I did from this.
Self indulgant person. I read this book in anticipation of visiting Dubai, only to be put off the place with this! She just went on and on about nothing much- wouldn't recommend. Only kept reading it, as I always read books i started, can't not. Waste of time reading it though.
Chic lit. is not a fair category for this book. I expect chic lit. to be fun but this is fun and well written. It's also really interesting to see another side of Dubai instead of just the lavish p.r. This book is an observation of being a young professional living abroad as well as a wry observance of actually living in Dubai.
Not so good
As others have pointed out, I was also hoping this book would be a diary of a single Western girls observations of life in Dubai - the people, the psyche, the culture, the adjustments a Westerner must make to living there, etc. It does start out that way and seems like the focus of the book, but the focus soon changes and we gradually get chapter after chapter of a young woman's love and sex life - written in a snarky fashion, all of which could more or less be set anywhere in the world. The author seems like she would be a fun person to know or have a chat with, and for it's type not a bad book, but not what the title makes it seem to be either.
A put down and pick up style. Interesting insights into life in Dubai. Hard to finish as there wasn't a story as such.
I loved this book with it's British sense of humour! As an Australian it was also interesting to read that the author now lives in Sydney. It showed a lot of what goes on with the ex-pats. As I have a work colleague who has now gone to Dubai to work It was a real eye-opener. I couldn't put it down.
I first picked Burqalicious up to read on the way to Dubai to give me a quirky insight on what the country might hold in store. This was a fun read and I happily read through to the end, very entertaining and definitely a different type of travel book with insight on the country, with a light humourous touch. Thanks Becky.
