About the Author
Kurt Eichenwald is the New York Times bestselling author of four previous nonfiction books. His second, The Informant, was made into a movie starring Matt Damon and directed by Steven Soderbergh. In addition to his distinguished work as a senior writer at Newsweek and a contributing editor at Vanity Fair, Eichenwald spent two decades as a senior writer at The New York Times, where he was a two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. He is also a two-time winner of the George Polk Award, as well as the winner of the Payne Award for Ethics in Journalism and an Emmy Award nominee. He lives in Dallas with his family.

Surefire bestseller, Pulitzer material, likely to be a movie. An incredible story. Highest recommendation for anyone interested in memoirs, medical stories, or overcoming adversity.Because of Kurt's high political and Twitter profile, you are likely to encounter hate speech directed at him and his work. If you are anything other than a vindictive, petty zealot, you can disregard that crap. I was at Swarthmore and on Kurt's hall when the events in this book occurred. I didn't know Kurt well at all, but every detail of this rings true, and Kurt has demonstrated that he is an outstanding and meticulous researcher in five best sellers.
I bought this book because I began having seizures at the age of 44. Mine were because of an AVM in my brain, but there is so little information shared with people with epilepsy and I don't know why. Even doctors aren't overly forthcoming when a person is diagnosed.I can't believe what Kurt went through due to his epilepsy. It's shocking to hear how he was treated in school and by so many doctors. I am glad he shared his story to give people a better understanding of what people with epilepsy have to deal with on a daily basis.The only thing I didn't care for was some of the arrogance that I sometimes felt from Kurt. Not that he doesn't deserve it, I just struggled with some of it.Otherwise an amazing book that people need to read. There are so many people with epilepsy in the world and yet we hear so little about it. It's a scary feeling to wake up on the floor and not know how you got there.
I have read all of Kurt Eichenwald's books, and for my money he is the best business author ever; I have long thought that at least one of his books, "A Conspiracy of Fools" (about the collapse of Enron), should be required reading at law schools and business schools. In fact, I probably do him a disservice by referring to him as a "business author" -- he's a brilliant writer who has particularly excelled in the business arena.However, i knew nothing of his life or background, and I certainly had no reason to think or expect that he is a brilliant memoirist. I also had no idea that he has epilepsy, much less that he suffered so greatly from the horrendous treatment accorded to him in his early years as a result of his disease.The book is simply riveting; i read its nearly 400 pages in two days, and literally couldn't put it down. His writing has its customary lucidity blended with incredible passion. It is profoundly upsetting, to the point that I found myself losing it in anger at his doctors, the administration at his college, and more. It is also moving, as when his parents begin to realize what he is going through or when he meets the caring woman who becomes his wife.This is not a "pretty" story, but it commands our attention and must be read.
I was very excited when I heard that this book was coming out as I have a 21 year old son with intractable epilepsy. At the time I sent a tweet to the author telling him my son’s story. I was surprised that I never received a response but I forgot about it.I just finished reading the book and was going to tweet the author. In doing so I just found out he blocked me. I am very upset as all I tweeted about was my son’s condition and that I was looking forward to his book. Now I am left with the feeling that this author just wants to sell his book and has no regard forhelping those with epilepsy. Why would he block me except that he didn’t want to be bothered with someone else’s epilepsy story. I am very sorry I purchased his book and spent time reading it. It has left me with a bad feeling.Update: The author just let me know that I was blocked by mistake. I am impressed that he spent the time to look into this matter and resolve it.
This should be “required†reading for anyone who knows anyone with epilepsy, or who struggles with it themselves. As a parent of a young child with epilepsy, this will help me to be a better advocate, it also gives me confidence and hope for my child’s future. I will continue to be transparent about her condition, and continue to use humor as a coping mechanism, and continue to teach her that she can accomplish anything as long as she doesn’t give up. I will also keep that strength and never give up. We are not alone. Thank you, Mr. Eichenwald, for sharing this and for not giving up, and for your transparency. Thank you for giving me more tools to fight for my daughter.
As someone who has epilepsy and who has been through many of the experiences described in the book, I feel like this story needed to be told. I hope this book can nudge a turning point in the care of patients with this disease. Each doctor tells us something different and prescribes something different making it a much harder journey than it needs to be, just like Kurt describes. Read this book if you have epilepsy or if you know someone who has epilepsy. And give a copy to your neurologist so he or she can see the human side of this disease. Thank you Kurt!
I grew up with epilepsy. I haven't had a grand mal seizure in nearly 30 years, but you never forget what they are like. They wring you out physically, mentally and emotionally. As I read Mr. Eichenwald's memoir, I had to put the book down several times because it brought back memories and feelings that I hadn't felt in a long time. Mr. Eichenwald went through hell with his doctors, college and employers. I was more fortunate with my doctors and university but, like Mr. Eichenwald, I felt the stigma associated with epilepsy and hid my disorder from friends and colleagues. I want to thank Mr. Eichenwald for telling his story and bringing epilepsy out into the open. This book is Pulitzer material.
